Saying goodbye to summer adventures 📚

Travel entry:
September 2025

Hey Reader,

Back to school is in full swing over here, with both kids now in middle school! It's hard to believe how fast the time is flying, but it's also a joy to see them coming into their own and growing into their passions.

Having the kids back in school definitely slows our travels down, as they're old enough that missing days can be a real challenge. So I'm leaning in to the time they're out of the house to catch up on writing about our adventures.

Before the chaos of back-to-school hit, we squeezed in one last summer trip to Colonial Williamsburg and the Historic Triangle. I went down to the area many times in my years as a Virginian, but I was really excited to share it with my family for the first time.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure how my teen would feel about “history vacation”… but thankfully both kids got into it. There were cannons, fifes, replica ships and more!

If you’re thinking about planning a trip, I put everything together here:

We used our Chase Sapphire Preferred points to cover flights and the travel credit on our CapitalOne Venture X to cover the hotel, which made the trip easier on our wallets.

I've also been diligently lining up our spring and summer travels. I know it seems too early, but honestly some of the best flight deals have already come and gone! Now's a good time to set your alerts on Google Flights if you're paying cash or PointsYeah if you're planning for award travel.

Hope your fall is off to a smooth start (or at least fueled by plenty of coffee ☕).

Safe travels,
Melissa

P.S. - The more expensive Chase Sapphire Reserve is now out with a record-setting offer! You should definitely consider it if you've never had this card before (I tried but was denied because I got the card years ago when it came out). The new annual fee is very high but if you travel even a few times per year you should be able to come out ahead with the different credits that are included. After the first year, you can downgrade it to the more affordable Chase Sapphire Preferred.

Travel entry:June 2025 Hey Reader, After making it through the end-of-school crush, we've now entered the period of pool time, sweaty summer camp days and family travel. It feels good to be here, though I do with the real feel outside was a little cooler (it feels like 93 as I sit on my porch writing this email). As I've probably mentioned, this summer we're breaking our usual rule of going somewhere cool and uncrowded. In fact we're doing the complete opposite: we're headed to Italy! We've...
